Tesco Purley put the boot in

Image
Purley's Tesco store continues its relentless march to rip the heart out of the town ... with an in-store shoe repairers. Rumoured to be a Timpson franchise, the new shoe repairers will seriously affect the business of the town's independent shoe repairers - Harris & Osman in Brighton Road. Led Zepp Spirited Taurus away? No way!

Image
Anyone think Led Zeppelin stole the gist of Stairway to Heaven from Spirit’s Taurus ? I am (was) a Spirit fan after I heard Fresh Garbage on that seminal The_Rock_Machine_Turns_You_On album of ’68 (14 shillings, if you’re asking). But after a thoughtful listen, I reckon the plagiarism accusation’s a bit unfair. Listen to Taurus – it’s a great instrumental piece, a really great work.

Mr Big, best bass lead ever.

I reckon Andy Fraser's performance in Free’s 1970 hit Mr Big is one of the greatest bass ‘leads’ ever.  Well, it is, actually! Check it out, here - Mr Big .  Andy takes the credit for writing Free’s only top 10 hit All Right Now when he was just 16!   Amazingly he went through a drinks and drugs hell and got AIDS. And survived. Thing is, and this is going to make me sound sound tragic, he’s Black. West Indian. Why do I mention this?   It’s just, I hadn’t noticed over the last 40 years – as if it was relevant – and I’ve just read Andy’s recollections, where it clearly was a big deal to him growing up, though in the British music business, at least, it made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Go Andy.   And Go Paul Rodgers (who IS still going!)
