Yakult health tax? Listen to your gut instincts

Image
Researchers at the University of California , San Francisco are suggesting that sugar contributes to a global death toll of 35 million people each year.   Because of this link with early onset diabetes, for example, they are suggesting a tax on all drinks that contain added sugar. That will include the Yakult yogurt drink that so enraged my mate Nutters when a load of free samples turned up at his place of work.   Yakult’s sugar content, at 18 per cent, is higher than natural orange juice or Coca Cola. I think Nutters was right to reject the sugary gift.   How infuriating that the manufacturers keep trying to make health claims, while spending millions on bogus research to boost their profits – 40% on each sugary bottle!   See here.   And here.

Failed St Paul's cleric lands Guardian job

You couldn’t make it up!   Failed St Paul ’s cleric, Canon The ex-Rev Dr Giles Frazer , has got a job as a journalist on the Grauniad! You’ll remember him as the principled priest who resigned from St Paul ’s because he feared the police would use ‘violent’ methods to clear the Occupy protestors.   Most will view that as running away from a management responsibility.   Nothing to do with principals.   Or religion, for that matter. In his first long piece as a journalist he preaches that the Occupy protestors will ‘revitalise Christianity.’ Really? What planet is he on?   On the contrary his dithering and desertion of St Paul ’s will have trashed the C of E’s reputation still further.   But perhaps he’s referring to Roman Catholic Christians? Read his thoughts here. ·         By the way this rev turned hack is a ‘narrative’ devotee.   In my book this is a perfect fit – academic+ Grauniad+head+up one’s a***!   See here.
