Yakult health tax? Listen to your gut instincts

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco are suggesting that sugar contributes to a global death toll of 35 million people each year.  Because of this link with early onset diabetes, for example, they are suggesting a tax on all drinks that contain added sugar.

That will include the Yakult yogurt drink that so enraged my mate Nutters when a load of free samples turned up at his place of work.  Yakult’s sugar content, at 18 per cent, is higher than natural orange juice or Coca Cola.

I think Nutters was right to reject the sugary gift.  How infuriating that the manufacturers keep trying to make health claims, while spending millions on bogus research to boost their profits – 40% on each sugary bottle!  See here.  And here.
