‘Broken’ - a TV series for the times we live in

We’ve been watching, and discussing, a powerful TV series called ‘Broken’ for our Lent Course at St Barnabas and All Saints.   It’s a visual, dramatic, aural feast. Created by Jimmy McGovern ‘Broken’ revolves around about a Roman Catholic Priest, brilliantly played by Sean, in a deprived city – somewhere ‘up north’. Lots of ‘issues’ and challenges for everyone that are worth debating. Not just for Roman Catholics.   Watch it on Netflix.   Or possibly catch up on BBC, see links below . Worth watching for the imagery alone.   Worth listening for the opening tune, ‘I think it’s going to rain today’ sung by Nina Simone.   Catch it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSYgoC_Dgw4 And who wrote it?   Amazeballs it was the ‘Short People’ composter Randy Newman! The theme tune, also called ‘Broken’, was composed especially by Ray Davies.   It just gets better and better, doesn’t it?   Listen here on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyP68pRBc30 Remember ‘Short Peopl

Boris - a leader for our times? I don't think so

No ‘world leader’ has covered themselves with glory with their handling of the Covid-19 emergency but we must all be confused about Boris Johnson’s flippant, contradictory and confusing example. And that’s quite apart from the fact that it’s almost impossible to take the man seriously.   After all, he’s essentially a TV wit.   Now, inevitably, the poor bloke’s caught the dreaded virus. Are we surprised, after those breezy press conference with the UK media crammed in with Boris and the robotic Prof Chris Whitty?   Boris and Whitty preached ‘social distancing’ but failed to lead by example. Claiming we had to rush towards herd immunity the PM, flanked by chief medical officer Whitty, and chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, ruled out mass testing and a UK-wide lockdown, measures recommended by the WHO. Then Boris U-turned on both measures. But his example, as in the way he lives his life, is terrible.   Earlier he told us he’d been at a hospital ‘shaking lot

A song for our times ...

Check this out.  It contains the f-word (and I don't mean facilitate) so make sure the kids aren't around. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPq7Jo3b5Rj_IJrvOKgnUkSsaunqzygiLvEONvEIQmt8BPODZrSH84htVG-RYmMaA?key=WllDNXlyZDFPNXJWb2hNNF9LYmJ5OFVhd0NNNTdB
