“It cannot be beyond the wit of government to impose simple limits on people to demonstrate they are genuinely seeking work.”

“It cannot be beyond the wit of government to impose simple limits on people to demonstrate they are genuinely seeking work.” The Nightwatch charity in Croydon want the Government to restrict immigration, saying it is being ‘swamped’ with destitute people fleeing the eurozone's troubled economies. They say it has seen a huge rise in jobless and homeless Europeans arriving as they flee troubled economies. Chairman Jad Adams, speaking at the charity's annual meeting, said the charity could collapse if the Government did not stem the flow of immigration as the Eurozone crisis deepens. He said the charity, receiving grants from the National Lottery and Croydon Council, cannot increase its capacity "endlessly" and its finances are now under strain. "I fear that many people we see as clients are not exercising their treaty rights to come to look for work, but it is simply more attractive to be poor in this country than in some others. He was sp

Nestle’s going, Allders is closing … now Bank of America is leaving. Will the last big business in Croydon please put out the lights?

Nestle’s going, Allders is closing … now Bank of America is leaving. Will the last big business in Croydon please put out the lights? Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) is closing its Croydon data centre next year. They will be moving from Cherry Orchard Road to Canary Wharf and Bromley in the first quarter of 2013. My question is – what’s the council doing?   They could be easing the tax burdens, red tape and regulatory barriers to business.   They could be shedding more staff, cutting parking charges, freezing exec salaries – or cutting them. All we hear is, they’re meeting people!!

Go Cal! Great Brit Crutchlow defies injury to finish sixth in British MotoGP … from back of the grid

Forget processional, frequent stopping, boring Formula 1 cars – the world motorcycle championship is where it’s at.   Yesterday’s British MotoGP round at Silverstone showed why – close racing and a Brit finishing sixth on painkillers after a 150mph crash in practise. It’s Cal Crutchlow, of course, showing guts and bravery to start the race at all – from 20 th at the back of the grid, thanks to that prang. Now Cal's fourth place in the championship standings and promising he’ll be fully fit for the next round in Assen, Holland . He told the Independent after the race - "I didn't know that I was going to be able to do that (crash). I could easily have trundled around in last place, but people have come here and bought the T-shirts and the flags and I couldn't let them down." The Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo won the race on his factory Yamaha, after reducing a three-second lead from reigning title-holder Casey Stoner on the Repsol Honda. Lorenzo now

1,000% inflation despot - a UN tourism ambassador

Image
You couldn’t make it up!   The UN has asked Robert Mugabe – the nearest despot the 21 st century has to Adolf Hitler – to be a global tourism ambassador. It so enraged Canada that they have pulled out of the UN tourism body. Mugabe is really happy at the UN honour.   He says this shows the world that Zimbabwe is a safe destination for tourists!   And this after BBC Radio producer Petroc Trelawany was arrested on spurious charges. The UK dispute that they had honoured the Zimbabwean thug.   So, what actually happened? The official line is that the UN invited him to “become a global leader in (tourism) and sent a letter in recognition of Zimbabwe's co-hosting of the organisation's general assembly next year.”   Hair-splitting or what? For me, it’s a b*** disgrace.   Mugabe should be a pariah.   Yet the country he has despoiled, corrupted and bankrupted is being given credibility by the very organisation that should be censuring him. For info, here’s
