1,000% inflation despot - a UN tourism ambassador

You couldn’t make it up!  The UN has asked Robert Mugabe – the nearest despot the 21st century has to Adolf Hitler – to be a global tourism ambassador.

It so enraged Canada that they have pulled out of the UN tourism body.

Mugabe is really happy at the UN honour.  He says this shows the world that Zimbabwe is a safe destination for tourists!  And this after BBC Radio producer Petroc Trelawany was arrested on spurious charges.

The UK dispute that they had honoured the Zimbabwean thug.  So, what actually happened?

The official line is that the UN invited him to “become a global leader in (tourism) and sent a letter in recognition of Zimbabwe's co-hosting of the organisation's general assembly next year.”  Hair-splitting or what?

For me, it’s a b*** disgrace.  Mugabe should be a pariah.  Yet the country he has despoiled, corrupted and bankrupted is being given credibility by the very organisation that should be censuring him.

For info, here’s the Kafka-esque response about the scandal from the UN’s press spokesman Martin Nesirky, in a transcript of a recent media briefing.


Spokesperson:  ……..  Yes, please, and then I am coming to you, George, yes.  Yeah?

Question:  Martin, there have been reports that the UN’s World Tourism Organization has cited Robert Mugabe as a leader of international tourism.  Can you comment on that and why he has been given such a designation?

Spokesperson:  Well, I think the World Tourism Organization has made it clear that this is not correct.  What happens is that there is an open letter which is available to all Member States within the World Tourism Organization, and as I think you are probably aware, Zimbabwe and Zambia are co-hosting the World Tourism Organization’s next large meeting.  And it is in the context of those arrangements that the leaders of both countries have been invited to sign this open letter — something which has been signed by many leaders already and is open to other leaders to sign to.

An African-German who wanted to join Hitler Youth and became a ground-breaking editor – amazing, true, inspiring

Every so often you read of someone whose life has been so unimaginable, so extraordinary – so inspiring – it takes your breath away.   This was my experience, today, reading of the life of Hans Massaquoi – a black teenager in Germany during the war who failed in an adolescent bid to join the Hitler Youth, survived the carpet bombing of Hamburg, played saxophone for American servicemen, emigrated to the USA, served in the Korean war and edited two ground-breaking black American magazines. Mick Woollett, a true gent.

Mick, a proper gent – I’ll miss him Mick Woollett (easy to remember the name, double everything except ‘e’ and ‘w’) died on Monday.   He was my editor at Motor Cycle Weekly in the ‘seventies and early ‘eighties.   He was mature in every sense of the word, made editor in his early fifties and a proper gentleman, having to work with an office-full of (mostly) youngsters.
