Ben and Cherie are engaged!

My youngest son Ben and his fabulous partner Cherie are engaged!  I can’t tell you how proud Sue and I are.  But I’ll try.

They are sooo suited!   Both are sporty, (mostly) laid-back, incredibly active, have an extraordinarily positive attitude to work, life, neither wastes ANY time … they’re just so sorted!

We first met Cherie when she turned up on the doorstep of our home in Kenley in 2008.  It wasn’t exactly a surprise, as Ben had dropped a few hints that he’d met someone special when he was snow-boarding in New Zealand.  It was a real pleasure to have the two of them together, while Cherie sorted out a job and a place to stay.  She managed that in a couple of shakes of a Wallaby’s bum – like I never tire of saying, you could parachute her into the middle of Ulan Bator and in a trice she’d have friends, a job, somewhere to stay...

The way they met was just so by chance … it HAD to be right.

We love them both – exactly as much as we love my eldest son and his wife Kate and their scrumptious son (our grandson) Tom.

Truly, my life is complete …

(Now, if they’d only stop bossing me about ….)

An African-German who wanted to join Hitler Youth and became a ground-breaking editor – amazing, true, inspiring

Every so often you read of someone whose life has been so unimaginable, so extraordinary – so inspiring – it takes your breath away.   This was my experience, today, reading of the life of Hans Massaquoi – a black teenager in Germany during the war who failed in an adolescent bid to join the Hitler Youth, survived the carpet bombing of Hamburg, played saxophone for American servicemen, emigrated to the USA, served in the Korean war and edited two ground-breaking black American magazines. Mick Woollett, a true gent.

Mick, a proper gent – I’ll miss him Mick Woollett (easy to remember the name, double everything except ‘e’ and ‘w’) died on Monday.   He was my editor at Motor Cycle Weekly in the ‘seventies and early ‘eighties.   He was mature in every sense of the word, made editor in his early fifties and a proper gentleman, having to work with an office-full of (mostly) youngsters. He never lost his cool, was unfailingly courteous, never swore and was always perfectly mannered.   Extraordinary. I plan to get a lot more off my chest about Mick, but for the moment I’ll leave you with this, true, story from, about 1982.
